Soapbox sponsors the production of recycled soap bars as a means to distribute soap to those who need it in this rural community. However, we work with Sundara to also employ women full-time who otherwise would not be able to earn money for their families. The final product is distributed to over 30 schools and orphanages, where the average student’s household brings in less than $1 a day.

Sundara has started India’s first soap recycling initiative. They collect used bar soap from luxury hotels in Mumbai and process this soap waste into new, sanitized bars. Sundara's program train underprivileged women from some of Mumbai’s poorest slums to process the soap. Many are single mothers and for most this is the first job they’ve ever held. Yet this is more than just a day job – these women are trained to be community hygiene ambassadors, handing out soap and conducting education classes on sanitation for parents and children alike. We don’t believe in handouts. We know that when knowledge is spread these communities become empowered and the good hygiene habits have a better chance of sticking.
